Extinction law variation across nearby galaxies produces slope changes in V-I color-magnitude diagrams of Cepheids; use of Wesenheit magnitudes (combining V and I) with variable R_V can still introduce 0.03-0.08 mag residuals if extinction varies within a single galaxy.
Dust extinction toward Cepheids introduces systematic uncertainty of 2-5% in distance estimates if not corrected; NIR extinction coefficients differ from optical (R_V > 2 toward some galaxies), requiring careful simultaneous fitting of reddening.
